Since this was posted on the net late last week it has been the topic of much internet debating, going by the high production we are pretty sure it will be someone we all know, popular guesses so far range from the most likely ‘Goldfrapp’, through to Christina Aguilera (not so sure) with mentions of The Knife, MGMT and Lady Gaga also being mentioned.

Band of the Day –

Once again we are in the situation of not knowing a huge amount about this band at the moment but from what we can tell it is Iain Woods who is the creative force behind the fantastically dark and brooding sounds of Psychologist.  Iain describes his music as ‘Pop’s Evil Twin’ but if anything you will hear the complete opposite to pop on the dark and atmospheric opening track.   It is closer to a Portishead/ Burial hybrid  (no bad thing) but when tracks ‘1994′ and ‘Bella’ kick in the Evil Pop moniker makes sense.  Still keeping the Portishead, dub step vibe but with big Choruses, soulful vocals and big guitar riffs… Psychologist turn into something completely different. Definitely ones to watch and if you like this check out DB faves Kid Adrift and She Is Danger.

Psychologist play the Windmill in Brixton 14th Jan, so worth checking out if you get a chance.

Oh yes, a bit of an exclusive for Dirty Boots today as we give you a little gift from Pontiak’s latest long-player. The track is the immense wall of sound that is ‘World Wide Prince’ from the forthcoming Sea Voids, which is released next month.

Pontiak wrote, recorded and mixed Sea Voids in eight evening sessions over the course of three weeks. The brothers sketched out what kind of album they wanted to make while on a two month US tour. It would be visual, it would be expressive, and it would be inspired by what the brothers had seen. When they returned home from tour they had just four weeks to write and record the album before disembarking on a European tour.

They tuned the bass and the guitar down to B, cranked their amps and let the air open up. Hardly any distortion pedals were used. It was just LOUD. Pontiak finished Sea Voids the day they left for Europe.

The band are returning to these shores for a tour with label mates White Hills in March. Catch them if you can – an immense and brutal live experience.

Free Energy

With chunky Stones’ riffs, Van Halan guitar lines, a love of Tom Petty,  Marc Bolan and even Thin Lizzy! Philadelphians Free Energy certainly know their music and with Killer tracks like Free Energy and Dream City you can totally see why James Murphy has signed them to DFA as his first big guitar band.  They have huge ambition and frontman Paul Sprangers has already decided that the early recordings are “too Indie” and they want to release “big pop music like the Boss himself”

With Mr Murphy also on board as producer Free Energy are an exciting prospect for bringing back good old  fashioned rock and roll.  There were a few bands last year that tried what Free Energy are doing but unfortunately got it wrong by trying too hard to keep their cool and forgetting that with this type of Rock n Roll people just wanna hear the music.

I will be at the LA Spaceland show on 23rd so watch this space for a review of the gig.

Liverpool’s music scene is thriving at the moment and one of the bands that people are rightly buzzing about are the Bicycle Thieves.  A fantastic 5 piece who, for me, are the next progression from the bands like White lies last year …They pull in from a lot of the same influences as White Lies but that’s where the comparisons end as BT songs feel like they have a lot more depth and there is a more expansive and cinematic sound whilst still managing not to be self indulgent.  Apart from the obvious Joy Division comparisons there is a lot more to find on repeat listens and I  can hear elements of The National, Radiohead and Godspeed to name a few.   Although the influences are there, Tom Hammerserley’s distinctively deep baritone vocal makes it very much the Bicycle Thieves own sound.  I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time with them at this year’s Dubai Sound City and, as well as playing some storming sets in some very bizarre settings, I got to see how tight they were as a band on and off the stage.  Something that will definitely help them along the way.  They play the Wilmington Arms tomorrow night (11th Jan) so do try to pop along but if you can’t make it keep checking the DB site for a full review and pics.  Bicycle Thieves have a lot of good things going on at the moment and definitely have what it takes to make a huge record and storm the festivals.  Watch this space as Dirty Boots follows their progress throughout 2010.
