The Dirty Mac Club!

dirtymacIt was my first time in the fantastic St Moritz Club, so I did not know what to expect as I entered what must be one of,  if not the last cavern venue in Soho.  Jess and I had been asked to DJ so we came armed with a bag full of 60’s garage/northern soul and freak beat records for the set.  Our set was filled with garage classics like ‘Liar Liar’ and ‘Psychotic Reaction’ whilst making sure that there were more obscure tracks like ‘Destroy that Boy’ & ‘Wanted by the Law’ for the music trainspotters in the crowd.  This was all in aid of The Dirty Mac Club night who are single handedly trying to put the swing back into Soho with their house bands and choice of  bands and DJ’s.

Alan Pownell was up first and, although I have always been a fan, I felt that he was the only artist that did not fit in with the theme.  I should add though that his set was still gorgeous and it was the first time that I had seen him play with a band which added another element to his music.

After a few more tunes from Jess and I, it was Young Rebel Set’s turn and their ramshackle indie/skiffle sound got the club rocking.  I am not sure if it is the normal set-up for the band as it sounded a little stripped down but there were still 6 members crammed on to what must be the smallest stage they have ever played.  Some of you may remember YRS in their previous form as Billy the Kid, who I always liked but think they have done well in slightly changing their set up and sound for Young Rebel Set.

Next up it was time for us to DJ once more whilst they set up the Dirty Mac House Band who came on to rapturous applause and proceeded to blast through a set of sixties classics including ‘Gimme some Lovin ‘ and ‘Hard to Handle’ to the delight of the punters crammed into the little underground club.

We at Dirty Boots love the Dirty Mac Club – long may it continue!
